The most surprising thing about being a first-time mom is the out-of-body experience. You think you are prepared, especially after pregnancy for 10 months, but I was not. In fact, breastfeeding had my body hold onto the fat. I didn't lose weight from breastfeeding the way countless moms expressed they did. It was confusing, surprising and depressing at times. Loving my body during the first 4 months was difficult, more surprising than I imagined
My expectation vs. experience breastfeeding was it wasn't a walk in the park for me. I had a lot of guilty feelings about it because I supplemented with formula and didn't do it past 4 months for either child. I would tell my own daughter so relax about it - do what feels right, your child will be healthy, happy and loved no matter which combination or choice.
The best piece of advice about motherhood is take care of yourself first and foremost and then the rest falls into place.
